Professional Development Plans

Personal Growth:

In my first year of teaching, I quickly realized that I wanted to write down all the things that were working well and things I would change for the following year. Whenever I had a second, I would write down in a notebook all the things that I wanted to try for next year so that I wouldn’t forget when it came time to implement them. Currently, I still make a list throughout the year and try new things each year.

Division PLC Goals:

Each year, Holy Trinity Catholic School Division has all it’s teachers pick a goal of something they want to improve on in their classroom for the year. In the past, some things I have done my PLC goal on were:

  • making math more engaging through project based assessments
  • making math more engaging through math warm up games
  • implementing the secret story phonics based program into my learning
  • Making writing more engaging using Adrienne Gears “Powerful Writing Structures” book

Professional Development:

Professional development is crucial for becoming a better educator. During my time as a first year teacher, I had the opportunity to take several professional development sessions at the Chinook Education Center. These included:

  • New teacher orientation
  • Balanced literacy (shared read/writes, writers workshop mini lessons, conferencing, making words etc.)
  • Guided Math (small and large group lessons, assessment, warm ups etc.)

Working with Michelle Dewar and Denyne Fontaine for ELA and Math immensely improved my skills as a teacher. We worked closely for the first year of my teaching on balancing literacy in the classroom and creating a wonderful interactive math classroom.

When I moved divisions and came to Christ the King school, some of the professional development that I have taken were:

  • new teacher faith orientation (I learned about teaching in a catholic school, as well as how that would look like with my own faith journey).
  • Non-violent crisis intervention
  • Indigenous Awareness Training: Four Seasons of Reconciliation
  • Respect in School
  • Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders

→Even though this doesn’t seem like a ton of PD, majority of my time at Christ the King school, I was taking my special education online which in itself is two and a half years of professional development.
